A HERO IN OUR MIDST

My cousin, Terry, sent me this photo of his dad. It was taken this morning as Uncle John sat on the deck of Terry's home. Uncle John is my dad's last surviving brother and my last surviving uncle. My dad and his other brothers are at rest. Here's what Terry wrote:
"Enjoy this attached photo of DAD ( Staff Sergeant John T Schultz Sr.) taken this morning on Memorial Day 5/31/2010 on our upstairs deck up in Boone, NC. Dad, who is 90, fought in the front lines in WWll and was there at the end of the European battle front when US troops met the Russian front in Berlin (Halle Germany) in April 1945. He is holding his BRONZE STAR. Please remember to think about and HONOR all of our Brave Soldiers who have given so much ... so we might have all of our FREEDOMS."
Have a Great Memorial Day,
Terry

I am ashamed to admit I wasn't aware of my Uncle John's service history or the medals presented to him. I knew he had served in the Armed Forces, as had my Uncle Wayne, but no one in my family ever talked about that history. Perhaps it was a time they wanted to forget? I knew my dad served state-side for a short time. According to what I'd been told through the years, Dad had been honorably discharged since he was my grandmother's sole support.
I'm proud of my uncles and grateful to them and all who have served and are presently serving. They put themselves in harm's way in order to keep us free. Even if you don't have veterans in your family, please pay homage to all who have given their time, talent, and even their lives for all of us. Let's not ever take our freedom for granted.

Found your wonderful blog through Gina. Love the way you express yourself. When I read your post about the bracelet, it made me tear up. That was me to a "T". I wore one of those bracelets but never wrote either...too many other fun things to do. AND not knowing what to say. Even though the bracelet is long gone, I will always remember his name. Thanks for bringing back that memory! ~~Annie

Oh what precious information, and now you do know and can cherish it. Thank heavens your Uncle survived that war. My father was a WWII veteran too and I don't have anything written, but only what I've been told by family members long ago.
