ANY VOLUNTEERS?

MY ONE AND ONLY SUNFLOWER BLOOMED TODAY
ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL?

This spring I couldn't decide whether or not to plant sunflowers. I love watching them grow and bloom, but I put off planting sunflower seeds and pretty much forgot about planting ANYthing. When the outside temperature begins to rise, I become an indoor person. All I need is a cold Diet Rite cherry cola, fabric, patterns, craft books, and air conditioning that works. Had I been blessed with the gardening gene, there would be no way I would have allowed the opportunity to plant sunflowers to go by the wayside. I simply don't have what it takes to be a gardener.
Even though I hadn't planted anything, one lovely sunflower pushed its way through the dirt and now stands alone in the midst of pumpkin vines. It must have been left from last year's sunflower patch. Linda, from Parker's Paradise, left a comment and mentioned she also had some "volunteers". I had forgotten what we call flowers that come up from previous years' planting. Thank you Linda for reminding me of the name.
I didn't even plant the pumpkins that surround the sunflower. My gardening friend, Deanna, (aka Herb Fairy), said if I set pumpkins outside after I was finished using them for decorating, they'd break down and eventually produce vines and more pumpkins. That made sense so I tried it with the ones I had last fall. I don't have pumpkins yet, but the vines are thriving and have lots of blooms on them

Our volunteer sunflowers are the biggest and strongest out there. We had volunteer potatoes this year. Apparently, hubby didn't get them all dug up last year. LOL I leave the gardening to him but I always insist on ZINNIAS, SUNFLOWERS, and MARIGOLDS out there. And he very graciously does. I should post a picture of my flowers. Come by and enter my giveaway, if you like.

Kady, that is one beautiful sunflower. I planted a half package last year and then when they came up, forgot where I planted them and pulled them up thinking they were weeds. So then planted the other half package and when they were about 4 inches high the rabbits ate them down to the ground. This year mine are finally growing in a different spot but so far I only have one bloom. The ants seem to love eating the leaves. And Kady, the picture of the kitten on your calendar looks JUST like the one on my front porch! Amazing.

Hi Kady! I bet that sunflower looks sweet amid your pumpkins. I also "recylce" my pumpkins and gourds from the previous year. I kind of like being surprised to see what I end up with that actually grows the following year!
