THE LONG GOODBYE

This is a big day for my little guy. At 2pm this afternoon we will be at the SICSA pet adoption center for his first official vet check. He will be tested for leukemia and FIV and if the results of those tests are negative (which I pray they will be) he'll be given vaccinations, checked for parasites, and scheduled for neutering. He's a bit young for that surgery, but most shelters and adoption centers in this area now have a policy of spaying or neutering an animal before it's adopted. The sad fact is, even some of the most kind and well-intentioned people sometimes don't have their adopted animals spayed or neutered when they should. SICSA is attempting to eliminate future problems and/or unwanted litters. I understand their reasoning.
So, this is the beginning of the long goodbye for Tucker and me. There's no guarantee everything will go smoothly, but I have to hope he will check out well and that there is someone somewhere just waiting for a little imp of a kitten to love and care for the rest of his life. Of course he will be here with me until that person comes along, but this is the time I have to ready myself for the separation. I've done this more times than I can count and it's never been easy. This time won't be any different.

It takes a special sort of person to do the job that you do. I don't think I could do it. But I do spay and neuter our pets.

Aww...hugs Kady...you are a hero to so many kitties. My heart breaks for you. I am tearing up just thinking about your goodbye. I have been following your adventure with Tucker and he has stolen a little piece of my heart as well. If you cannot keep him, God will surely find a wonderful home and a loving family to take him in and love him forever. He has to...why else would you have come along to save the little guy? You are in my thoughts.

Your kindness is endless. You knew it would break your heart no matter how it turned out. If he had passed in the night or if he grew healthy and found a happy home, you would still feel that emptiness in your heart. But now, knowing you have done as much as you can for him, and that he will find a happy home, you have to also being feeling happy and proud along with the emptiness. And you should be. He has reached this milestone because of your unconditional love. I am happy for the family that gives Tucker his forever home. They are getting one special kitty that had one special surrogate Mom. My heart goes out to you and my prayers are for Tucker.
