HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine's Day used to be a big holiday when I was a kid. Not only did our elementary classes decorate shoe boxes for Valentine mail, my brother, sisters, and I searched the local Kresge store for the best Valentine's we could find, within our price ranges, which were limited. We wanted to find just the right cards to give our classmates.
There were always cartoon character Valentines, cute looking animal cards, and some even had sweet mushy sentiments. It was a challenge to find cards that fit our classmates personalities - not too childish or silly but not too mushy either. Oh what a dilemma it was if we found two packages of cards we liked.
It was also a big deal to sit at the kitchen table, sort the cards, and choose who would receive which card. Once we'd sorted them, we'd sign the cards, insert them into envelopes, and write the students' names on the fronts. I'm sure I spent a few sleepness nights wondering if I should have chosen a different card for this friend or that one.
One of the best Valentine treats one could receive was a package of conversation hearts. If one was very lucky, she might find someone had sneaked a package into her Valentine mailbox or placed a box of them on top of her desk when she wasn't looking. In my family, our mom would often wait until after Valentine's Day and purchase a few boxes half-price. We didn't care when we got them, we just were happy to have them.
However you spent Valentine's Day - whether you revisited childhood memories or made new ones - I hope your day was full of love and joy.

Hi Chrissy! How have you been? Love hearts is a good name for those little confections. I don't buy them anymore - I think I had enough of them when I was a child.

Hi Shelley - I didn't buy any of those hearts this year. I think I had my fill of them years ago but they sure do bring back sweet memories......Kady
