The kittens are really growing. They are now five weeks old. I know...I can't believe it either! They've completely outgrown the bathroom. Even though I'd been allowing them to come out and play in the livingroom at intervals, they really need more room to stretch their legs and explore. I arranged their new room this afternoon. It's actually my old sewing room in the lower level of my home. I think they have everything they need for now. There's a place to climb, lots of places to curl up and nap, and plenty of toys for play.
Kelly remains in "mama kitty mode" and is extremely protective of her babies and that's fine, but tonight she became so overwrought when one of the other cats in the household stuck his paws under the door to her room, that she lunged toward the door, hissed loudly, then turned on the closest kitten and smacked him. The poor little guy sat there for a couple seconds and then hissed at his mama. Good for him! I picked him up and cuddled him until he seemed less frightened. When I put him down, he scampered off as if nothing had happened. I think all was forgiven, but I wasn't very happy with Kelly.
I can't help that the other cats are curious about Kelly and her kittens. That's very natural. I've kept them from seeing her or the babies though, in order to protect them. I don't think any of my cats would ever harm a kitten, but I don't take any chances.
The only negative thing about the big move today (besides Kelly being upset) is that they're not just down the hall anymore. Now they're downstairs in a much larger room and I miss them, but they needed more room to grow and we needed to reclaim the bathroom.
