CHRISTMAS WAS GONE WITH THE WIND

HAPPY CHRISTMAS BIRTHDAY MOM

MOM WAS PLEASED WITH THIS CARDINAL BY HALLMARK

Another Christmas has come and gone. Why does it seem to go so quickly? The weeks leading up to the big day are busy and filled with shopping, cleaning, and baking, then the day is here and gone in the wink of an eye. It happens like this every year, so why am I always surprised?
We had our family gathering at Daughter's home and it seemed a good time was had by everyone. Each person brought a small gift and we played the White Elephant game. We had plenty of good food and conversation. We also celebrated my mother's 87th birthday and the only negative aspect was that Mom would not come home with me to spend a few days. My sister and I thought she would be happy to get out of her home and visit with Spouse and me for a little while. Mom lives two hours away from us and I admit I don't go up and visit her as much as I probably should. She has rarely visited us at holiday time and I thought it would be something she'd want to do, but I was mistaken.
I talked to her, tried to reason, even offered a bribe that we'd go to the fabric store and she could choose some flannel if she wanted to work on some lap robes, but it was to no avail. She would not consent to staying with us for a couple days. She first said she couldn't stay in this cold weather - I told her she'd be inside a warm home. She then said she hadn't any clothes with her - my sister assured her she had packed clothes, just in case of a blizzard. Mom then offered that she didn't have medications with her - my sister assured her she did have them with her. On and on it went. Mom had one excuse after another for not staying. I finally stopped trying to convince her.
Elderly people feel more comfortable in their own surroundings and I understand that, but Mom often complains she doesn't have the opportunity to go anywhere or do anything. We were presenting her with an opportunity. I told her we could try again in Spring, but I imagine she'll have other excuses then too. She refused to come last Fall when I'd invited her to visit for a few days. I have the feeling she's not going to come at all. She did seem to have a good time on Christmas Day, and maybe that's enough for her.
