TIMMY AND BETSY
To my dismay, Valentine's Day has flown past me and so has the better part of this week. There are so many things I wanted and needed to do, but I became sidetracked easily and my time seemed to go so quickly. This week brought an unexpected crisis. My 88 year old mother fell in her home and was hospitalized. She remains in the hospital as I type. My sisters and I are thankful she didn't break any bones, but we have run smack dab into the brick wall we knew lay ahead of us. Our mother, who has lived alone since our dad passed 40 years ago, simply cannot continue to do so. She has dementia and now needs more monitoring and physical help than we can provide. To be accurate and fair, I must admit that my sisters have shouldered most of the responsibility for Mom's care so she could stay in her home. I live two hours away and would feel less guilty had I made more frequent visits to our mother. Warranted or not, guilt has set in for all us. We have some major decisions to make and they won't be easy ones, but it helps to know we're not alone. Many friends and relatives have dealt with these types of situations and even more challenging ones. My distraction this week might be understandable. The sweet furry Valentines continue to be a source of joy and offer a needed respite from the reality that a long and difficult road lies ahead of us.  When I'm with my furry companions I'm able to shut out the jumbled thoughts that hold my mind hostage and simply enjoy the cats and their antics. I remain very blessed.

Hi Kady,

I have been a follower of your blog for a while and I don't think I have commented here much. Sorry about that.

I love your kitties. We have had them in the past and they are so fun. We have a little dog, a Maltese. She is hilarious. :)

It looks like we have the same situation in common. My mom, who is only going to be 79 this April has had some troubles.

She has fallen a couple of times. And was been in the hospital and a nursing home for a month. I am far from her too. 1,000 miles. :( And I couldn't get up there. She is alone too. :( I wish I can figure out what to do.

If you'd like to email me, I have a email me thing on my blog at ...

Will be praying that things work out for you all. Take care, Janet W

Hello, I am quite new to your blog through Linky. I couldn't help but tear-up when reading your post. Hubster and I faced this very situation this past summer with his mother. We had her here in our home, but as she became harder to care for because of her dementia, we made the hard decision of putting her in a nursing care facility. It was the best decision we'd made concerning her care! She is very well cared for here, and loved by everyone there. We are Blessed to have her here and she loves it! Many activities, outings, etc. keeps her busy and doing better. Just a suggestion! Hope thing go well for you! You are in our thoughts! Hugs, Loretta

Sorry to hear about your Mum Kady - the only positive is that she didn't have any fractures, but it is a sign that things will have to change for her and her living circumstances. It is very difficult for families to deal with these issues, we had to deal with this when my Dad had several falls and my Mum just couldn't do the physical stuff for him anymore, so he was placed in a private nursing home where he was cared for very well and his last two years were lived in safety and comfort. I hope things go well for the future care of your Mum, it is a challenging transition, and one we as their children don't necessarily want to have to make, but eventually it is unavoidable!
I wish your family well.
Indeed it is a joy to visit with your furry friends, they are a blessing and a great distraction when life gets tough....
