I think I'm finally finished decorating for the holidays. It took me long enough to get into the Christmas mood though. There have been years when I wanted to pull out every single traditional item that meant something to me and use it in my decorating. This year I realized it doesn't matter how I choose to decorate my home as long as I'm happy with it. So I'm going with "less is more".
We had packed away so many things when we thought we were moving that I still can't find some items, so I compromised and used what I had on hand and what I could easily gather. I didn't even hang the lighted wreaths in the windows this year, and to be honest, I don't miss them. I guess it really is time for some changes.
The tree has been up for awhile, as have my ceramic houses. They look so festive when they're lit at night. I put up a red kitchen tree and trimmed it with vintage crocheted potholders and tin kitchen utensils I played with as a child. Seeing those little treasures reminds me of the carefree days of childhood. Holiday anticipation was overwhelming back then.
We can't go back and re-visit childhood but we can still make ourselves happy this Christmas season. Look for joy in the small things - colored lights on a Christmas tree, holiday music playing on the radio, leisurely lunches with friends, and the anticipation of gathering with family members to celebrate the real reason for the season.
